How To Set Up Cut Files for Custom Printing

Properly preparing your cut files ensures your cannabis signage, decals, or prints come out flawless—whether it’s a sticker, window graphic, or gator board print. Here's a simple step-by-step guide for how to set up your cut files correctly with Print420.

What is a Cut File?

A cut file is a specially prepared digital design file that includes instructions for our machines to accurately trim around your graphic. It's often used for custom shape cuts, kiss cuts, or die cuts. These files must include a designated cut path—a vector outline that tells the printer where to trim.

Setting Up a Cut Line

  • Create your cut path as a 1 pt stroke in a bright, unique color (like magenta or 100% cyan) and name the swatch "CutContour".

  • Ensure the cut path is on a separate layer above your artwork.

  • The cut line should be a closed vector path—open paths or broken lines will result in inaccurate cuts.

  • Avoid raster images for cut paths—only vector shapes are accepted.

File Formats We Accept

To maintain accuracy in your custom cannabis decals or signage, we recommend submitting your files in one of the following formats:

  • PDF

  • AI (Adobe Illustrator)

  • EPS

  • SVG (for cut paths)

  • TIFF or JPEG (for artwork, flattened)

Be sure your vector files are saved in CMYK mode and have fonts outlined.

Bleed and Safe Zones

  • Add a 0.125" (1/8 inch) bleed on all sides.

  • Keep all vital artwork (like text or logos) 0.25" inside the trim line to ensure it doesn’t get cut off.

Examples of Common Cut Applications

  • Cannabis logo decals with intricate edge cuts

  • Window clings with contour trimming

  • Custom-shaped foam board signs for dispensaries or events

Tips for Success

  • Do not flatten or rasterize your cut path.

  • Double-check that your cut line doesn’t intersect or overlap with design elements unless that’s your intent.

  • Always preview your file before sending to ensure your artwork and cut path are aligned properly.
